Zoan was an ancient city in the Nile Delta region of , also known by its name Tanis. Numbers 13:22 notes that was built seven years before Zoan, suggesting it was one of the most ancient inhabited sites known to the . Psalm 78:12, 43 places the wonders God performed for Israel 'in the field of Zoan,' making it the setting for at least some of the plagues. 19:11, 13 and 30:4 mock the wise counselors of Zoan who give foolish advice to Egypt, and 30:14 includes Zoan among the Egyptian cities that will be judged. Its prominence in prophetic texts reflects its status as a royal administrative center.
