The Zered was a brook or wadi that marked the boundary between and Edom, flowing westward into the southern end of the . In Numbers 21:12, the camped in the valley of Zered during their wilderness journey. Deuteronomy 2:13–14 gives it special significance as the point Israel crossed after thirty-eight years of wandering since Kadesh-barnea — the moment when the entire generation of fighting men who had left had died, as God had declared. The crossing of the Zered thus marked the end of one era and the beginning of the generation that would enter .
