Zarethan was an ancient city in the Valley, mentioned in two distinct biblical contexts. In 3:16, the Jordan River's waters 'rose up upon an heap very far from the city , that is beside Zaretan' when Israel crossed on dry ground — placing Zarethan as a geographic reference point for the miraculous crossing. In 1 Kings 4:12 it marks part of a Solomonic administrative district boundary, and in 1 Kings 7:46 has the bronze implements for — the pillars, the sea, the lavers — cast in the clay ground between and Zarethan in the Jordan plain. It appears as Zarthan in some verses and may correspond to a site in the central Jordan Valley.
