Who or what is this?
Zarephath was a Phoenician town belonging to , situated on the Mediterranean coast between and Sidon. During the severe famine that followed 's prophecy, God directed him to go there, saying that a widow had been commanded to sustain him (1 Kings 17:9–10). Elijah found her gathering sticks, her supply of flour and oil nearly exhausted. After his assurance, the jar of flour and the jug of oil did not fail throughout the famine. When the widow's son later died, Elijah stretched himself on the child three times and the Lord restored his life — one of the earliest resurrection accounts in the Old Testament. cites this episode in 4:26, noting that Elijah was sent to this Gentile woman rather than to any widow in Israel.
