Who or what is this?
Tophet was a specific site within the Valley of just outside , where — including kings and — made their children pass through fire as offerings to , a practice the Bible repeatedly condemns (2 Kings 23:10; 2 Chronicles 28:3; 33:6). King defiled Tophet during his reforms so that it could no longer be used for such rites. The prophet invoked it most forcefully, declaring that the place would be renamed the valley of slaughter because of the judgment God would bring on Jerusalem (Jeremiah 7:31–32; 19:6–14). Its imagery of burning and death is closely linked to the New Testament concept of as a symbol of final judgment.
