Who or what is this?
A town in the lowlands situated on the border between and territory, changing hands between the two peoples at different periods of history. It is most prominently associated with , who saw a Philistine woman there and demanded her as a wife (Judges 14), and on his way down to encountered a young lion that he tore apart with his bare hands. The riddle Samson posed at the wedding feast in Timnah — drawn from the carcass of that lion and the honey found in it — sparked the violent chain of events that marked the beginning of his conflict with the Philistines. In the time of , Timnah was among the cities taken by the Philistines (2 Chronicles 28:18).
