Who or what is this?
A city on the western shore of the Sea of , built by Herod Antipas around 20 CE and named in honor of the emperor Tiberius. The Sea of Galilee is referred to as the Sea of Tiberias in the Gospel of John, which uses this designation when recording the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:1) and the post-resurrection appearance of to his disciples by the water (John 21:1). Tiberias itself appears in John 6:23, where boats from the city come to the place where the crowd had received the bread. As a Gentile city built over a cemetery, it was considered ritually unclean and is absent from the Synoptic accounts of Jesus' ministry around the lake.
