What and where is this?
Shittim (Abel-shittim, 'meadow of acacia trees') is the last encampment on the plains of , east of the and opposite , before the crossing into . At Shittim Israel sinned with the daughters of Moab and worshipped Baal-Peor (Numbers 25), and it was here that the census was taken (Numbers 26) and delivered his farewell addresses. sent the two spies to Jericho from Shittim (Joshua 2:1), and the nation set out from there to cross the Jordan (Joshua 3:1). The prophet later invokes the journey from Shittim to as a reminder of God's saving acts (Micah 6:5), and Joel 3:18 envisions a future fountain watering the valley of Shittim.
