Shebah is the well dug by 's servants in , named in Genesis 26:33 after the oath Isaac swore with Abimelech king of the Philistines. After a series of disputes over wells in the valley of , Abimelech and his commander came to Isaac to make a covenant of peace; they swore an oath, and Isaac named the well Shebah, which means 'oath.' The text notes that from this well the city derived the name Beersheba — 'well of the oath' or 'well of seven.' An earlier episode in Genesis 21 connects a similar naming to 's covenant with Abimelech at the same location.
