The city of Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, who blessed Abraham and received his tithe; traditionally identified with Jerusalem.
Who or what is this?
Salem is the city over which reigned as king and priest of God Most High, who came out to meet after his victory over the four kings and blessed him with bread and wine (Genesis 14:18–20). Abraham gave him a tithe of all the spoil. Salem is widely identified in tradition with , a connection made explicit in Psalm 76:2. In the New Testament, 7 draws an extended parallel between Melchizedek, priest of Salem, and — arguing that Melchizedek's priesthood, without recorded genealogy or end of days, foreshadows Christ's eternal high-priestly office.
