Phoenicia is the coastal region stretching along the eastern Mediterranean north of Israel, dominated by the great trading cities of and . In the Old Testament it is the homeland of king of Tyre, who supplied cedar and skilled craftsmen for 's temple, and of , daughter of the king of Sidon, whose influence spread worship into Israel. In the Gospels, travels into the region of Tyre and Sidon where he heals the daughter of a Syrophoenician () woman who pressed him for help. Acts notes that scattered believers reached Phoenicia after the persecution over , and passed through the region on his final journey to .
