Ophir was a distant land of exceptional wealth, best known as the source of fine gold sent to . 1 Kings 9:28 and 10:11 record that 's fleet brought 420 talents of gold from Ophir, along with almug wood and precious stones. Solomon's servant fleet also made the voyage to Ophir (1 Kings 22:48). The gold of Ophir became proverbial for quality: Job 22:24 and 28:16 and Psalm 45:9 all use 'gold of Ophir' as a measure of finest value. 13:12 uses it in a metaphor for human rarity. The precise location of Ophir remains uncertain — proposals range from Arabia to India to East Africa — but the Bible consistently treats it as a remote maritime destination.
