Fortified ridge south of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, built up by Jotham and Manasseh and inhabited by temple servants after the return from exile.
Who or what is this?
Ophel refers to a prominent spur or ridge on the southeastern slope of Mount in , south of the sanctuary precinct. In 2 Chronicles it is associated with construction work: Jotham built much on the wall of Ophel (2 Chronicles 27:3), and extended the wall of Jerusalem to include the Ophel (2 Chronicles 33:14). 3:26–27 records that the who dwelt in Ophel helped repair a section of Jerusalem's wall near the Water Gate. The term 'ophel' in can mean an elevated mound or fortified hill, and the specific area is generally understood as the ancient City of zone between the temple complex and the area.
