Mount Zalmon near appears in Judges 9:48 during the violent career of Abimelech son of . After the people of Shechem rebelled against him, Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon with his forces, cut down branches, carried them to Shechem, and used them as kindling to burn the tower-fortress of Shechem, killing approximately a thousand men and women inside. The name Zalmon also occurs in Psalm 68:14 in a poetic image of snow falling on Zalmon, though whether this refers to the same site is uncertain.
