Mount Seir is the rugged, mountainous territory south and southeast of the that became the homeland of and his descendants, the . Genesis records that Esau settled in the hill country of Seir after returned to , and God's word to Israel in Deuteronomy 2 is that Seir was given to Esau as a possession — Israel must not provoke its inhabitants. The traveled along the edge of Mount Seir during the wilderness journey. The prophets, especially (chapters 35–36) and , announce devastating oracles against Seir/Edom for its violence against , while and others envision Edom's future desolation as a sign of divine justice.
