Who or what is this?
Meribah, meaning 'strife' or 'quarreling,' names one or two sites in the wilderness where Israel contended with God over water. The first instance (Exodus 17:7) is at , combined with the name , when struck the rock and water flowed out. A second Meribah episode occurs at in Numbers 20:1–13, where Moses and struck the rock twice in anger rather than speaking to it as God commanded — and for this failure God barred both brothers from entering the promised land. Psalm 81 and 95 recall Meribah as a symbol of Israel's hardness of heart, and 47 and 48 use the name for a spring near Kadesh.
