Who or what is this?
was a town in the hill country of and the center of an associated wilderness region. It features in the story of 's flight from Saul: when Saul's forces were closing in on David in the wilderness of Maon, a messenger interrupted the pursuit to report a raid, forcing Saul to break off, and the place was afterward called the Rock of Escape (1 23:24–28). , the wealthy but surly herdsman whose wife was later married by David, was from Maon and worked his flocks around and Maon (1 Samuel 25:2). Maon also appears in the tribal allotment list of Judah in 15.
