Island in the central Mediterranean where 's ship runs aground after the long storm on the voyage to , and where all two hundred seventy-six on board come safely to land. The natives show unusual kindness and kindle a fire because of the rain and cold. Paul is unharmed when a viper fastens on his hand, and he heals the father of the chief man of fever and dysentery, after which the rest of the sick on the island also come and are healed.
