Ancient Benjaminite city in the Plain of Sharon, resettled after the exile and known in the New Testament as Lydda, where Peter healed Aeneas.
Who or what is this?
Lod was an ancient town in the Plain of Sharon west of , assigned to the territory of and rebuilt by Shemed, a descendant of Benjamin, according to 1 Chronicles 8:12. After the exile it was among the settlements repopulated by returning Benjaminites ( 11:35; 2:33). In the New Testament the city appears as Lydda, the place where healed a paralyzed man named Aeneas who had been bedridden for eight years, prompting many in the Sharon plain to turn to the Lord (Acts 9:32–35). Lydda stood near , and when Tabitha died the disciples at Joppa sent there for Peter (Acts 9:38).
