Who or what is this?
Laish was an ancient city situated in the far north of , described in Judges 18 as a quiet, unsuspecting community of living at a distance from their kinsmen. When the tribe of , unable to secure its original allotment in the south, sent scouts who discovered Laish, a large force marched north, conquered the city, and burned it. They rebuilt and settled it, renaming it after their ancestor, and set up a graven image there — establishing a cultic site that would later become one of the twin golden-calf shrines when divided the kingdom.
