Kartah is listed in 21:34 as one of four cities given from the tribe of Zebulun to the Merarite clan of , alongside , Dimnah, and Nahalal. The city appears nowhere else in the biblical narrative, so its sole significance is as one of the forty-eight Levitical cities distributed throughout the tribal territories to provide pasturelands and residences for the Levites who had no tribal land allotment of their own.
