A Canaanite royal city in the Shephelah of Judah whose king joined the failed alliance against Gibeon and was executed by Joshua.
Who or what is this?
Jarmuth was one of the five city-states whose kings formed a coalition against after its treaty with Israel, prompting the famous battle narrated in 10. Piram king of Jarmuth, along with the kings of , , , and , besieged Gibeon and was met by Joshua's army in a surprise attack; the coalition was routed, aided by hailstones, and halted by the sun standing still at Gibeon. The five kings hid in a cave at , were taken out, publicly humiliated, and executed. Jarmuth itself was subsequently taken and destroyed. In the later period it appears in 11:29 as one of the Judean towns where returning exiles settled.
