What and where is this?
Jahaz is the site of the decisive battle in Numbers 21:23–24 in which king of the gathered his army to fight Israel and was defeated, allowing Israel to take possession of his land from the to the . Deuteronomy 2:32 recounts this engagement as a foundational moment in the conquest of Transjordan. The city was subsequently allotted to the tribe of (Joshua 13:18) and assigned to the Merarite (Joshua 21:36). Isaiah 15:4 and Jeremiah 48:21, 34 mention Jahaz in oracles against , indicating the city later came under control and became a target of prophetic judgment. The name is also spelled Jahazah and Jahzah.
