What and where is this?
The Jabbok is a river that flows westward through the hills of Transjordan to join the from the east, roughly midway between the Sea of and the . In Numbers 21:24 and Deuteronomy 2:37 it marks the northern boundary of territory and the southern limit of the kingdom of . Its most memorable biblical appearance is in Genesis 32:22–32, where sends his family across the ford of Jabbok and is left alone, only to wrestle until daybreak with a divine stranger who dislocates his hip, blesses him, and gives him the name Israel. The encounter makes Peniel — 'face of God' — the place where Jacob declares he has seen God face to face and lived.
