A Canaanite city in the Negeb destroyed by the Israelites and renamed 'Hormah' (destruction) to commemorate the event.
Who or what is this?
Originally called Zephath, this city in the Negeb is best known for the account in Judges 1:17 in which and utterly destroyed it and renamed it Hormah, a word meaning 'destruction' or 'devoted to destruction.' Numbers 21:3 records an earlier vow by Israel to devote Canaanite cities to destruction if God would grant victory, after which they called the place Hormah. Conversely, Numbers 14:45 and Deuteronomy 1:44 describe an earlier defeat at Hormah when the people tried to advance presumptuously. lists its king among those defeated, and it later appears in the administrative lists of the Negeb towns allotted to Simeon and in the record of cities to which sent gifts after the raid on .
