Who or what is this?
The Valley of the Son of Hinnom (also called Ge-Hinnom or ) runs along the western and southern edges of , forming part of the city's natural boundary. It is condemned in the Old Testament as the place where , including kings and , burned their children as offerings to and at the high place called (2 Kings 23:10; 7:31–32). The prophet Jeremiah declares that God will rename it the 'Valley of Slaughter' on account of these abominations. By the New Testament period Gehenna had become the standard Jewish term for the place of eschatological punishment, and employs it repeatedly in the Synoptic Gospels to describe the destiny of the unrighteous.
