Head of the northern Canaanite coalition, burned by Joshua, rebuilt by Solomon, and later captured by Assyria.
Who or what is this?
A large and strategically important city in the upper region, described in 11 as "the head of all those kingdoms." Its king Jabin assembled a coalition of northern Canaanite kings with horses and chariots to resist the advance, but Joshua defeated the alliance at the waters of , burned Hazor, and killed its king. A later king also named Jabin reigned at Hazor and oppressed Israel until and defeated his general . subsequently rebuilt and fortified Hazor along with and Gezer (1 Kings 9). The king Tiglath-pileser III captured Hazor and deported its population during the reign of of Israel.
