A city in , in the territory east of the allotted to the half-tribe of , designated in Deuteronomy 4 as one of the three cities of refuge east of the Jordan alongside Bezer and Ramoth-gilead. appointed these cities so that any manslayer who killed a person unintentionally could flee there for protection. Golan is also listed among the Levitical cities given to the Gershonite clans of the tribe of Levi in 21 and 1 Chronicles 6. The region of Golan in Bashan gave its name to the broader territory.
