Its primary significance in the biblical narrative is as the hometown of , one of 's most trusted counselors. When launched his rebellion, Ahithophel defected to him and provided counsel so shrewd that David compared it to consulting God directly (2 Samuel 16). After Absalom rejected his tactical advice in favor of 's counsel, Ahithophel returned to Giloh, set his house in order, and hanged himself (2 Samuel 17).
