A city in the territory allotted to the but associated in practice with the Philistines, listed among the Levitical cities given to the in 21. Gibbethon appears twice as a flashpoint in the violent politics of the northern kingdom: Nadab son of was besieging Gibbethon when Baasha conspired against him, struck him down, and took the throne (1 Kings 15); and approximately twenty-five years later was encamped against Gibbethon when news came that Zimri had killed Elah, prompting the army to proclaim Omri king on the spot and march on Tirzah (1 Kings 16).
