Gehenna is the rendering of the "Valley of " (ge hinnom), a valley on the southwestern edge of where, according to the Old Testament, some burned their children as offerings to . In the New Testament, uses Gehenna as the primary term for the place of final punishment, contrasting it with life, and warns that it is better to lose an eye or hand than to have the whole body cast into Gehenna. It is described as a place where the fire is not quenched, and James 3 refers to the tongue as being set on fire by Gehenna.
