Garden planted by God in the east where the first humans are placed to work and keep it, watered by a river that divides into four headwaters including the Tigris and . It holds the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the latter forbidden to and . After the fall they are driven out, and cherubim with a flaming sword guard the way to the tree of life. Later prophets, especially and , invoke Eden as an image of fertility and primeval glory, and Revelation returns to its imagery in describing the new creation.
