, also called Kirjath-sepher (City of the Book) and Kirjath-sannah, was a prominent city in the hill country of , southwest of . conquers it and strikes down its king in the southern campaign (Josh 10:38–39; 12:13). then offers his daughter in marriage to whoever captures it (Josh 15:15–17; Judg 1:11–13), and his nephew — the first judge — takes it and receives both the bride and the water springs she requests. Debir was later assigned as one of the cities of Judah and designated a Levitical city (Josh 21:15).
