The northernmost significant city of the kingdom of Israel, originally the town of inhabited by . A large contingent of the tribe of migrated from their cramped southern allotment, conquered Laish, burned it, rebuilt the site, and renamed it Dan after their ancestor (Judges 18). The city became the proverbial northern limit of Israel in the recurring expression 'from to '. Under it was chosen as one of the two locations for the golden calves that established rival worship to in , an act the prophets repeatedly condemned. The shrine at Dan appears in the stories of the northern kingdom's religious decline (1 Kings 12; 2 Kings 10; 8).
