Mesopotamian city whose deported inhabitants, resettled in Samaria by the Assyrians, introduced the worship of the god Nergal.
Who or what is this?
Cuthah (or Cuth) is a city in from which the resettled people into after the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel (2 Kgs 17:24, 30). The Cuthahites brought with them the worship of their god Nergal. Because so many of the new inhabitants came from Cuthah, the were sometimes derisively called 'Cutheans' in later Jewish tradition. The episode illustrates the Assyrian policy of population exchange and its lasting religious consequences in the region.
