Who or what is this?
is the biblical name for the region south of , broadly corresponding to the ancient land of Nubia and encompassing parts of modern Sudan and Ethiopia. It is described in Genesis 2:13 as the land encircled by the Gihon River. The appear throughout the Old Testament as warriors and traders: ' wife is called a Cushite (Num 12:1), and an official named Ebed-melech the Cushite rescues from a cistern (Jer 38:7–13). The prophets — , Jeremiah, , and — repeatedly invoke Cush as a distant powerful nation that will ultimately bow before the God of Israel. The book of Acts records the conversion of a court official of , queen of the Ethiopians, who meets Philip the evangelist on the road from to (Acts 8:26–39).
