Chinnereth
town and sea in Galilee
Fortified town in Naphtali whose name also designates the Old Testament sea later known as the Sea of Galilee.
Who or what is this?
Chinnereth is both a fortified town in Naphtali (Josh 19:35) and the name of the sea in the Old Testament that would later be called the Sea of — referred to as the sea of Chinnereth in Numbers 34:11 and 12:3; 13:27. The name likely derives from the town, or both from the word for harp, describing the lake's distinctive curved shape. The sea and town appear in boundary descriptions for Naphtali and 's eastern allotment, and the sea is mentioned as a geographic marker for the extent of the conquest under Joshua.
