Who or what is this?
Caesarea Philippi was a city at the foot of in the far northern part of , near one of the main sources of the River. Built by the tetrarch Philip and named in honor of , it was distinguished from coastal Caesarea by the addition of 'Philippi.' It is best known in the Gospels as the setting of 's confession that is 'the Christ, the Son of the living God,' to which Jesus responds by declaring Peter a rock on which he will build his church and by promising the keys of the kingdom of heaven ( 16:13–19; 8:27–29). The proximity of pagan shrines to Pan at the site gives the exchange a pointed background — Jesus poses his question about identity in the shadow of a renowned center of Gentile worship.
