Beth Shemesh is a town in the foothills of , designated as a Levitical city on the border between Judah and Dan. Its most dramatic moment comes in 1 6, when the Philistines, wanting to be rid of the plague-bringing ark of the covenant, set it on a cart pulled by two cows that walked straight to Beth Shemesh. The joyful reception turned to disaster when the men of the city looked into the ark and many were struck dead, prompting them to send it on to . Beth Shemesh also appears as a battleground where King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah of Judah (2 Kgs 14:11).
