Beth Shean is an ancient city positioned at the important junction where the Valley meets the Valley, making it one of the most strategically significant sites in . Although the tribe of received it as part of their allotment, they could not drive out the there because they possessed iron chariots (Josh 17:11–12; Judg 1:27). The city achieved grim prominence after the battle of Mount : the Philistines fastened the bodies of King Saul and his sons to the walls of Beth Shean (1 Sam 31:10), until the men of retrieved them. The city was later reorganized under as part of his administrative districts.
