Fortified Shephelah city near the valley of Elah where the Philistines camped against David, and one of the last Judahite strongholds to fall before Babylon.
What and where is this?
A fortified city in the of between and , playing a role in several key military episodes. After the five kings flee before , he pursues them as far as Azekah and Makkedah, and God hurls great hailstones on them (Joshua 10:10–11). In the and narrative, the Philistines are encamped between Socoh and Azekah in the valley of Elah (1 Samuel 17:1). fortifies Azekah (2 Chronicles 11:9). During the siege of Judah, Azekah is one of the last cities holding out alongside and (Jeremiah 34:7), a fact corroborated by the Lachish ostraca from archaeology.
