A town first listed in the allotment of the tribe of ( 15:42) and then reassigned to the tribe of within Judah's territory (Joshua 19:7; 1 Chronicles 4:32). Ashan was further designated as one of the Levitical cities set aside for the priests who were not descendants of (1 Chronicles 6:59; in the parallel list at Joshua 21:16 it may be represented by Ain). The town is mentioned only in these allotment and Levitical city lists with no accompanying narrative.
