Numbers 32:34 lists it among towns rebuilt by the Gadites, though Deuteronomy 2:36 associates it with the . 13:9–16 includes Aroer on the Arnon as part of the Reubenite inheritance. The city appears in 's boundary argument (Judges 11:26) and in the census undertaken by for (2 24:5). 17:2 references Aroer in the oracle against , and 48:19 invokes it in the context of 's fall.
