A major river and canyon in Transjordan flowing westward into the , forming the traditional northern boundary of . Numbers 21 places Israel's march along the Arnon before the defeat of king of the , whose territory had extended north of the Arnon from Moab. Deuteronomy repeatedly uses the Arnon as a geographic anchor ("from Arnon unto "), and 12 defines the extent of the conquered Amorite and regions in relation to it. Judges 11 recounts 's argument to the Ammonites that Israel legitimately held land from the Arnon to the for three hundred years. The Arnon also appears in the Moabite oracles of 16 and 48.
