A chief city or district of , located along the River and sometimes used to denote the entire territory. Numbers 21:15 and 21:28 mention Ar in the context of Israel's march through Transjordan, noting that fire from consumed it. Deuteronomy 2 records that God instructed Israel not to harass or attack the Moabites at Ar, since he had given that land to the descendants of Lot. 15:1 includes Ar among the Moabite cities destroyed in a night, placing it within an extended lament over Moab's fall.
