Zimri son of Salu was a prince and leader of a family in the tribe of . During the episode at Baal-peor recounted in Numbers 25, when Israel was committing harlotry with the daughters of and a plague had broken out, Zimri openly brought a woman named Cozbi — daughter of Zur, a chief of Midian — into the camp in full view of and the weeping congregation. son of Eleazar the priest took a javelin and thrust it through both Zimri and Cozbi in the tent, and the plague was stayed. God credited Phinehas's action as zeal for the Lord, and a covenant of perpetual priesthood was promised to his line because of it.
