Israelite chariot commander who assassinated King Elah and ruled for just seven days before burning the palace over himself when Omri besieged Tirzah.
Who or what is this?
Zimri was a commander of half the chariots of Israel under King Elah, son of Baasha. In 885 BC, while Elah was drinking himself drunk at the house of his steward Arza in Tirzah, Zimri struck him down and seized the throne. He then exterminated the entire house of Baasha in fulfillment of the prophecy of the son of Hanani. When the army of Israel encamped at heard that Zimri had conspired and killed the king, they immediately proclaimed , the commander of the army, as king instead. Omri marched on Tirzah, and when Zimri saw that the city was taken he went into the citadel of the king's house and burned it over himself. He had reigned only seven days, and 1 Kings records that he continued the sins of .
