Ziba was a servant of the house of Saul who comes to prominence in 2 when , seeking to show kindness to any surviving member of 's family, summons him and learns of 's existence. David assigns Ziba and his fifteen sons and twenty servants to work the land of Saul on Mephibosheth's behalf. During 's rebellion Ziba meets the fleeing David with provisions — bread, summer fruit, wine, and donkeys — and claims that Mephibosheth has stayed in hoping to regain his grandfather Saul's throne. David grants Ziba all of Mephibosheth's estate. When David returns after Absalom's defeat, Mephibosheth disputes Ziba's account, and David — uncertain of the truth — divides the estate between them.
