Who is this?
Zelophehad was a man of the tribe of , a descendant of Hepher, who died in the wilderness leaving no sons. His five daughters — , , , Milcah, and Tirzah — came before , Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation at the door of the tabernacle and argued that their father's name should not disappear from his clan merely because he had no male heir. God instructed Moses to grant their petition, establishing that daughters may inherit when a man dies without sons. The case is revisited in Numbers 36, where tribal leaders raise the concern that marriage to men of other tribes could transfer land between tribes; the daughters are consequently instructed to marry within Manasseh. Their story appears in Joshua 17 as well, where the daughters successfully press their claim before Joshua.
