Priest of the division of Abijah, husband of , who is chosen by lot to burn incense in when the angel appears to announce the birth of a son to be named John. Because he doubts, he is struck mute until the child is born and named. At the naming his speech is restored and he prophesies the Benedictus, blessing the God of Israel who has visited and redeemed his people and identifying his son as the prophet of the Most High.
